In many cultures, it considered being a new birth for a woman. Pregnancy becomes unlikely after Menopause. Your periods may not stop altogether immediately but the frequency will be reduced with longer and longer gaps between two periods. The oestrogen hormone secretion in your reduces body at the age when menopause occurs. This may cause certain physical symptoms like
    • Hot flashes
    • Sweating heavily in the nights
    • Frequency shifting moods
    • Dryness in the vagina

    Diagnosis and Treatment

In most cases Menopause is not a very challenging condition physically. In some cases the symptoms might interfere with your normal daily life in which case treatment may become necessary.

It is diagnosed by a blood test for follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), If the existence of FSH is lost than the average levels or may indicate Menopause.

For treatment general diet and lifestyle changes are sufficient in most cases. If that doesn't completely relieve the symptoms oestrogen replacement is prescribed by the method of hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

For vaginal dryness, vaginal lubricants are available.

And for mood swings anti depressants are utilized in proper dosages.

If you are experiencing extreme discomfort due to Menopause symptoms please schedule a counselling session.

  • PCOS - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a common condition found in women in which benign cysts are found in the ovaries. If you have at least two of these three symptoms you might be diagnosed with PCOS.
    • Cysts in ovaries impending release of the ova
    • Irregular ovulation and irregular periods, sometimes even non-existent
    • Presence of male hormones in excess causing too much body hair
    • Decline infertility and difficulties in getting pregnant
    • Hirsutism - excessive hair growth in the face, chest, back and buttocks
    • Weight loss and weakness
    • Thinning, breaking and shedding hair
    • Oiliness in the skin
    • General listlessness and loss of energy
    • Depression
The cause of PCOS is as yet unknown but there is a reason to believe it may be genetic. It often runs in the family. PCOS is connected to hormonal imbalance. It not only causes testosterone (male hormone) in your body but also insulin. Insulin controls the sugar content of your body and an excess of it may cause type 2 diabetes later in life
There is no known cure for PCOS but the symptoms can be managed.
A course of fertility drugs can be tried first. In the event of failure of fertility medication a procedure called Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling (LOD) will be prescribed. LOD involves using heat or laser rays to destroy the ovarian cysts responsible for the hormonal imbalance.
  • Fibroids - Fibroids are non-cancerous, benign, cyst-like growth on and around the uterus. These are made of muscle fibre, hence the name Fibroids, They are also known as leiomyomas.

    Symptoms

Quite a few women do not experience any symptoms and are completely unaware of the condition , therefore.

Women who do experience symptoms may get -

    • Heavy and painful periods due to leakage of fibrous tissue through the vaginal passage.
    • Pain in the abdomen and the lower back.
    • Frequent urge to urinate.
    • Chronic constipation.
    • Pain during Sexual intercourse.

    Diagnosis of Fibroids

It is advisable to go for regular gynaecology check-ups since Fibroids in many cases don't show any symptoms so it may be difficult to catch and may only appear during other routine tests.

If you do face the symptoms you will go through an ultrasound scan under advisement by your GP to confirm the diagnosis.

    The Causes of Fibroids -

The causes have not been determined as yet despite extensive research. The enquiry into the cause continues even as we speak. However, the occurrence of Fibroids has been linked to -

    • Imbalance in oestrogen hormone levels (excess)
    • Genetics
    • Obesity

    Fibroids Treatment -

Fibroids treatment may be quite unnecessary if there are no harmful symptoms. They diminish over time as the oestrogen supply in the body reduces with age.
If you do face challenges due to Fibroids your physician may suggest hormone therapy to control the oestrogen levels in your body. Failing that, non-invasive surgery is a useful weapon against Fibroids.

  • Contraception - Contraception methods are ways to prevent pregnancy when you don't want it. They should not be confused with prophylactics which are ways to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. There is some overlap between the two though e.g. Condoms are both prophylactic and Contraceptive.

There are 15 different methods of contraception and you can choose the one that suits your needs exactly.
